Civil War papers of Carleton Hunt, 1861-1864.

Papers document Hunt's commission, parole, and life during the Civil War including travel to Canada. Included is Hunt's handwritten memoir from 1864, addressed to "Wight" (probably Rezin Augustus Wight, also Harvard AB 1856) along with orders, correspondence, and handwritten copies of medical certificates.

Carleton Hunt (1836-1921) earned his Harvard AB 1856. He was from Louisiana and received a commission as a first lieutenant of artillery from the governor of Louisiana in 1861. He was captured by federal forces but was paroled. He went to New York and wrote a brief memoir there in 1864. He later became a law professor and dean at the University of Louisiana (which is now Tulane University) and a member of the United States Congress.
